a Matt Sharpe web project

Tony and I set out to figure out somewhere to camp from 9/3 to 9/6 (essentially labor day weekend) because he has off of work. It started with the idea of going to Acadia in Maine. When we discovered they were either booked solid or first come first serve walk up reservations we started looking elsewhere. Ideas mentioned included but were not limited to White Mountains National Forest (NH), Baxter State Park (ME), and Shenandoah National Forest (WV). After about an hour of trying to decide on a location we started looking up costs of plane tickets to fly somewhere GOOD like Big Bend National Park (TX) or Grand Canyon National Park (AZ). With limited income we didn’t want to pay more than $400 for the roundtrip ticket and as you can imagine our options were limited. This trip is still under construction but I have a good feeling that no matter where we end up it will be a good time. My money is kind of lying with Baxter State Park in Maine because it seems to have the most available sites and is within a drivable distance. It’s also home to Mount Katahdin which is the northern most point on the Appalachian trail.

It seems like once a summer Joe and I take the last of our money ($40 this time around) and go camping for at least one night. Saturday night we decided to go for it. We head north to Jenny Jump State Forest near Hackettstown, NJ. The camp site was pretty secluded and up on a hill away from a parking area. The trails were pretty good. Short but still challenging for both of us because we are out of shape old men. $40 each paid for gas, food, camp site, and we had left over food supplies. It was a fun trip. The weather wasn’t too hot. We hiked about 6 miles total. I can’t believe this is the first time this CAMPING SEASON that I’ve been able to go camping even over night. Last summer I went 4 or 5 times. Hopefully when it starts cooling off I will continue to camp. Here are some photos from the trip that I took with my phone.

A few weeks ago kev, zack, joe and I went up to Delaware Water Gap for 3 days of camping and adventure. These are some photos I took with my phone. We hiked up 2 mountains and were about 20 feet away from a black bear in the wild. It was a fun trip. Check out the pics?
